Jorian Charlton is a photographer working in portraiture. Her work focuses on Jamaican-Canadian culture through her personal experiences and those of her community, highlighting themes of Black family life, intimacy, community and love. Charlton creates atmospheres, fashions and poses that tell stories about Caribbean diasporas and Black representation.
Jorian shed some light on her work and feelings about being recognized as a 2023 finalist. Read more below.
In your own words, can you describe your practice and why you're drawn to the art you do?
I'm a portrait photographer interested in black family life/ representation, focusing on community, love and intimacy. I love documenting private moments, as well as the beauty of everyday moments. I aim to capture my subjects in a timeless way.
Tell us what it means to be recognized as a Toronto Arts Foundation Award finalist.
I'm honoured to be recognized as a Toronto Arts Foundation Award finalist and to be seen. Black representation is important to me and I always aim to show the significance of belonging in my work.
