TORONTO, June 27, 2014 –Toronto Arts Foundation is delighted to announce the addition of a new award to our repertoire: Emerging Jazz Artist Award, a $10,000 cash prize.
The Emerging Jazz Artist Award furthers the career of an outstanding emerging jazz artist and is intended to support the pre-production, production and/or recording of original music composed by the recipient. Guidelines and applications forms can be found at www.torontoartsfoundation.org. The Emerging Jazz Artist Award was established this year, through the generous donation of Cheryl and Manuel Buchwald, and will be given out annually for at least 10 years.
"Few awards recognize jazz and Toronto is blessed with many talented young musicians worthy of support" said Cheryl and Manuel Buchwald.
Toronto Arts Foundation Awards are designed to heighten public awareness of arts and artists in Toronto by shining a spotlight on artistic excellence and achievement. Each award honours prominent practitioners, supporters and organizers whose work has made a major contribution to the artistic and cultural life of Toronto. These awards are presented in recognition of a body of creative accomplishment, rather than for specific works or achievements.
“Support at the early stages of an artist’s career is a crucial launching pad for artistic excellence”, remarked Claire Hopkinson, Director and CEO of Toronto Arts Foundation. “Thanks to the Buchwald’s wonderful generosity, the Foundation is able to focus its investment in an important phase of an artist’s development”.
Nominations for the Emerging Jazz Artist Award are due on September 15, 2014.
