2020 Community Arts Award Nominations Now Open

$10,000 award nomination deadline is July 29

TORONTO, June 29, 2020 – Toronto Arts Foundation, through its Neighbourhood Arts Network, is seeking nominations for the 2020 Community Arts Award. The $10,000 award celebrates an arts organization that has made a significant contribution in Toronto by working with, in and for communities, while creating access and inclusion to arts and culture.

Established in 2013 as the TD Arts Diversity Award, the award was re-named the Community Arts Award in 2018. It is presented in the fall of each year, and rotates from individuals to organizations in alternating years. In 2020 the award will be presented to an organization.

All nominees must demonstrate a commitment and/or focus on community-engaged arts and access to arts and culture in Toronto. Any person may submit a nomination, and organizations may nominate themselves.

Past recipients include dancer, performer, instructor, mentor and cultural arts programmer Collette ‘Miss Coco’ Murray (2019), local arts service organization UrbanArts (2018), Vanier scholar, visual artist, activist, curator and educator Syrus Marcus Ware (2017), and Toronto community film festival Regent Park Film Festival (2016).

"Although we know within ourselves [our] work is meaningful because we see the results every day, we’re really excited about the doors being opened to potentially greater resources through leveraging this opportunity." – Marlene McKintosh, Executive Director, UrbanArts, 2018 Recipient

"We need awards that support unsung heroes of activism and arts in the city! We need this incredible work of organizing and creating to be supported and recognized for what it is – incredible labour designed to make the world a better place." – Syrus Marcus Ware, 2017 Recipient

“The 2020 Community Arts Award is an important and tangible way to recognize organizations that are dedicated to supporting community through the arts,” said Claire Hopkinson, Director & CEO, Toronto Arts Foundation. “The attention, thought and responsiveness that is required when working with community cannot be overlooked, and through this award, we’re pleased to shine a spotlight on critical work that is happening our city. If you know of an outstanding arts organization that is making a difference in your community, please nominate them!”
