Toronto Arts Foundation releases results of Arts Stats 2017

TORONTO, September 26, 2017 - Over the past 12 months, most Torontonians (74%) have donated to a charitable or non-profit organization. But when asked where they’re likely to place their donations, the arts are near the bottom of the list.

Toronto Arts Foundation released the results of their Arts Stats 2017 in partnership with Leger. Arts Stats 2017 brings together the results from a public opinion poll and a survey of arts administrators revealing where perceptions of philanthropy to the arts differ.

Arts Stats 2017 explores the theme of generosity, revealing how the arts stack up against other charitable organizations for donor dollars, the barriers that stop people from giving, the benefits of volunteering and donating, and what information could persuade someone to become a donor. The results provide insights into why Torontonians donate to the arts.

73% of Torontonians say that making a difference is the top benefit to donating to the arts. Surprisingly, receiving acknowledgement (34%), and getting invitations to special events (31%) are not top priorities to donors.

Since 2013, we’ve be partnering with Leger to explore public opinion about the arts. This helps us better understand the depth of appreciation Torontonians have for the arts – from attending events in their own neighbourhood, to having experienced the arts as a child, to engaging with the city’s vibrant arts and culture scene - the arts add to the quality of life in Toronto.

Dave Scholz, Executive Vice-President, Leger, commented “We’re happy to be partnering with Toronto Arts Foundation to deliver a new set of research: Arts Stats 2017. Torontonians are very connected to the arts. The arts are essential to the city, and donors know this. When deciding when and where to donate, the majority of Torontonians agree that it comes down to knowing how the donation will be used, knowing that that they’re making a difference, and affordability. This new set of data will hopefully offer new models for arts organizations in their fundraising efforts.”
