Kae Murphy named Recipient, 2023 Emerging Jazz Artist Award

TORONTO, June 27, 2023 - Today, Toronto Arts Foundation announced the recipient of its Emerging Jazz Artist Award. The award furthers the career of an outstanding emerging jazz artist and offers a $10,000 cash prize with finalists receiving $1,000. This marks the tenth year that donors Cheryl and Manuel Buchwald have generously supported the award.

Three nominees were celebrated for their future potential and active contributions: Julien Bradley-Combs, guitarist, composer and educator; Madeleine Ertel, trumpeter, composer, and arranger; and Kae Murphy, trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist.

Speaking live on stage at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Kelly Langgard, Director & CEO, Toronto Arts Foundation and Toronto Arts Council, Jesse Ryan, saxophonist, composer and Board Member, Toronto Arts Foundation, and Josh Grossman, Artistic Director for Toronto Downtown Jazz (producers of the annual TD Toronto Jazz Festival), announced Kae Murphy as the 2023 award recipient.

Kae Murphy is a Toronto based freelance musician. Hailing from Owen Sound, ON, they have studied at the University of Toronto, the New School, the Banff Centre and the School of Improvisational Music. They have performed internationally with artists such as BADBADNOTGOOD, Whitney, Donny McCaslin, Maria Schneider and others.

The award presentation was followed by a performance by 2022 Emerging Jazz Artist Award recipient Andrew Marzotto.

The panelists who helped assess nominations for the 2023 award are Waleed Abdulhamid, multi-instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, music and film producer, Allison Au, Canadian saxophonist, composer and arranger, Josh Grossman, Artistic Director for Toronto Downtown Jazz and Andrew Scott, jazz guitarist.
