Andrew Marzotto named 2022 recipient, Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Jazz Artist Award

The award furthers the career of an outstanding emerging jazz artist and offers a $10,000 cash prize with finalists receiving $1,000.

TORONTO, June 29, 2022 - Today, Toronto Arts Foundation announced the recipient of its Emerging Jazz Artist Award live on stage at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. Supported by Cheryl and Manuel Buchwald, the award furthers the career of an outstanding emerging jazz artist and offers a $10,000 cash prize with finalists receiving $1,000

This year, three nominees were honoured and celebrated for their accomplishments and future potential: Madeleine Ertel, trumpeter, composer, and arranger; Aline Homzy, violinist, composer and community builder; and Andrew Marzotto, guitarist, composer and educator.

Following a performance by 2019 Emerging Jazz Artist Award recipient Mark Godfrey, Claire Hopkinson, Director & CEO, Toronto Arts Foundation and Toronto Arts Council and Josh Grossman, Artistic Director for Toronto Downtown Jazz (producers of the annual TD Toronto Jazz Festival), announced Andrew Marzotto as the 2022 award recipient.

Andrew Marzotto has been playing guitar since the age of nine. After graduation from Berklee in 2016, Andrew returned to Toronto and developed into a performing and session guitarist accompanying world-class instrumentalists and vocalists, while also appearing on a diverse collection of albums ranging from hip-hop to cutting edge jazz. The assessment panel noted Andrew’s versatile and adventurous compositions and bold playing, and remarked that he deserves to be recognized.

Past Emerging Jazz Artist Award recipients Jesse Ryan (2020, and a Toronto Arts Foundation board member) and Joanna Majoko (2021) also gave performances at the event.

Driven by their passion for jazz and dedication to supporting emerging local talent, Cheryl and Manuel Buchwald approached Toronto Arts Foundation with the idea for the Emerging Jazz Artist Award. The award has been given out every year since it was established in 2014.

The assessment panel for the 2022 Emerging Jazz Artist Award was comprised of jazz artists and leaders Nancy Walker, Chelsea McBride, Kelsley Grant and Josh Grossman.
