Governing with Soul

Our final Creative Champions session of 2019 gets right to the heart of the matter: do organizations that emphasize compassion, caring and shared values have greater success in achieving their missions? Marjorie Sharpe, in her pivotal book Governing with Soul, argued that a deeply felt values and vision based approach was at the core of the most successful charitable organizations.

Ann Rosenfield, Editor of Hilborn Charity eNews and an award-winning fundraiser and non-profit professional, will guide us through Marjorie’s research and conclusions and their practical application to things from the recruitment and orientation of board members, leadership practices and transparency, to innovation and impact. Governing with Soul even makes the case that fundraising itself is a process that enriches the soul: what better food for thought to round out the year and honour the achievements of Toronto’s arts board members?

Speaker Biography
Ann Rosenfield is a working front-line fundraiser who also serves as the Editor of Hilborn Charity eNews. She is the only member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals to be part of the team that won the Mo Davies Award for Excellence in Small Charity Fundraising as both an Executive Director and Board leader. In her spare time, she serves as an event volunteer for the Toronto Fringe, ImagineNATIVE, and spent 3 ½ months last summer rehearsing to be a community dancer for Dusk Dances. She is a subscriber to Coal Mine Theatre, Tarragon, and the Canadian Opera. She sings Alto in the Annex Singers where she was in charge of ticket sales for 5 years. Marjorie Sharpe was the first President and CEO of the Toronto Community Foundation, which she led successfully for 11 years. Marjorie remained very active in the community after her tenure and published Governing with Soul, a book of her learnings in not-for-profit sector, at the age of 79.
